I Love Ponds!!!

I am Jeff and I ain’t affraid to admit it, I love ponds. I love listening to the trickle of a waterfall while staring at the beautiful movement of my Koi fish community spiraling around the plants and rocks at the bottom of my Koi pond, it’s enough to make anyone forget the stresses of a long day in the cubical. Since I started building ponds and raising Koi I have learned all there is to know to create, maintain and improve my backyard oasis.

I am glad you have found my site because I am more than happy to share with you everything I know about pond liners, pond pumps and fountains, pond plants, Koi and other pond fish that can help you know what it takes to design, build & maintain your pond.

Maintaining your pond is easy to do, especially when you do it right. Go ahead and check out my KEY to a Clear Pond page for great tips on keeping your little/big eco system crystal and clear.

This web site is here to help everyone from the pond enthusiast to the amateur puddle builder. You can learn how to build a pond by reading from a number of informative articles on liners, pumps, filters, plants, fish, fountains and a number of other useful supplies. We also have a backyards design page with pictures of small garden ponds and large Koi ponds to help you get an idea of type, size and look you are trying to create.

Koi Water Ponds

Koi ponds must be quite large, depending on how many Koi you want to keep in your pond its recommended they be at least 1000 gallons in size. 500 gallons would be acceptable for 5-10 Koi but if you want to go smaller or bigger just keep the rule of thumb; 1 Koi to every 100 gallons. Koi need at least one area of the pond to be roughly 3 feet deep, 4-5 feet or deeper in colder climates to avoid freeze.  Koi will limit you to the amount of plant life you can keep in your pond, Koi eat plants. Water Garden Ponds

Water gardens beautiful and just that, they are mainly built for looks and can typically come in any size. Water gardens can also have fish but it is recommended you use small breeds of gold fish, avoid Koi as they will continue to grow despite the saying “they only grow as big as their surroundings”, not true. Water ponds do not have to be extremely deep though it is best to know before hand the plants you intend to use as some plants require different depths, gravels & aeration. MORE ABOUT PLANTS
