How to Determine a Pond Design

Things to consider...
Do you want greenery in your pond? How much?
Do you want Koi or other fish in your pond? How many?
Its important to answer these questions before you even get started because each plant and fish needs its own unit of water which will help you determine the size of pond you will need to be building. Plus, for every living thing you add to your pond it adds that much more waste, so you will have to consider that when determining the size and type of filtration to use. Also, pumps provide aeration for the plants and fish to survive, so you will need to know how many gph your pump will need to be turning.
There are 2 popular ways 2 build a pond.
Concrete/Gunit ponds
Hard or soft liner ponds
Concrete ponds are basically permanent, if you need to move or get rid of the pond later it will be a chore pulling it up and breaking it, not to mention draining it - that is “if” you install a drain.
Hard liner ponds are popular, they are pre designed (shaped) and if the need to come out just drain and chuck it. This can be done in a day.

If you are a beginner? There are lots of kits out there that are pretty nice and not terribly expensive or if you want to get the feel of maintaining a pond (recommended) buy a wood bucket pond or a good sized fountain, with these you just add water and you could try adding some 25 cent gold fish to practice maintaining a balanced water system.
